Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned.
Bo Bernhard
Bo Bernhard, Vice President of Economic Development at UNLV and a fifth-generation Las Vegas native, has spent his career studying the industries that make the city tick — and exporting that expertise around the globe. From shaping the way other global cities think about tourism and entertainment to guiding major development projects in Thailand, Boston, and beyond, Bo brings a mix of academic insight and hometown pride. In this episode, he unpacks why 2025 is a “big year” for Las Vegas and how its DNA of hospitality, kindness, and bold reinvention is poised to shape the global economy.
The DNA of Las Vegas
Growing up in East Las Vegas, Bo learned early how deeply the city’s identity is tied to hospitality. Whether it’s the warmth at Golden Knights games or the transformation of Raiders fans into part of the Vegas experience, he sees kindness as something nurtured by the city’s unique environment. In his view, Las Vegas “selects for nice” — and that quality has ripple effects far beyond the Strip.
Building the ‘Fun Economy’
Bo’s signature concept — the “fun economy” — combines tourism, sports, and entertainment into a single powerhouse sector that accounts for 14% of all global spending. With half the planet now in the middle class and two-thirds projected soon, the demand for experiences over possessions is booming worldwide. Las Vegas isn’t just riding that wave — it’s leading it, exporting its expertise in creating memorable experiences to cities across the globe.
From Imposter Syndrome to the TED Stage
Despite decades of public speaking, Bo admits he almost turned down his first TED Talk out of fear it might flop. But he recognized that fear, when it comes from insecurity, is often a sign you should say yes. Working with renowned speaking coach Amy Ayoub transformed his approach, sharpening his message and delivery. That talk, “Why Las Vegas is Smart,” opened unexpected doors — including advisory roles with the City of London.
Kindness as a Long Game
Bo closes with a personal story about his Harvard baseball teammate David Forst, now the general manager of the soon-to-be Las Vegas A’s. Their friendship, formed without agenda decades ago, is a reminder of his core philosophy: “Be kind because you never know.”
