The Network Effect in Action

MDL Group Utah Networking Effect

Spring events in Utah and Las Vegas highlighted a simple truth: when relationships grow, so do insight, opportunity, and service.

In commercial real estate, progress rarely happens in isolation. It grows through conversations, shared experience, and trusted relationships that create momentum over time. That is the network effect in simple terms, and this spring, three events we attended reinforced just how valuable it is. From an educational session to policy discussions in Utah and the ICSC conference in Las Vegas, each event offered a different reminder that strong connections lead to better insight and better service.

When your advisor is in the room, at the policy table, the industry conference, the local chapter meeting, you benefit from those conversations without having to be there yourself. Staying connected to the people and discussions shaping the market is part of how we stay useful to you. As we’ve grown into the Greater Salt Lake market alongside our longstanding work in Las Vegas, those connections have become even more meaningful.

In April, we attended the Utah CCIM meeting focused on creating investment sales proformas. On the surface, proformas are about numbers, assumptions, and financial models. But the most useful takeaway was broader than that. Good analysis depends on understanding what matters most to both buyers and sellers and aligning the presentation of value with client goals. Just as important was the opportunity to learn alongside brokers, lenders, title representatives, and other professionals who all bring a different perspective to the same transaction. Those conversations help sharpen judgment in ways that go beyond any spreadsheet.

In early May, the Utah chapters of BOMA, CCIM, and IREM hosted the 2026 Annual Legislative Town Hall. The event brought together commercial real estate professionals and state legislators for a discussion of current and upcoming policy affecting the industry. Despite the close proximity and similar issues like land availability, the Las Vegas and SLC markets have unique policy agendas. Staying true to our community value, MDL Group was one of the event sponsors. That combination of learning and participation matters. Understanding legislation helps firms better advise clients, but supporting the local industry community matters too. The stronger the local network, the better equipped everyone is to respond to change, share information, and create better outcomes.

To finalize the spring event calendar, the commercial real estate industry gathered in Las Vegas for ICSC, bringing 25,000 people together for conversations about retail. Discussions reinforced strong interest in the Mountain West and highlighted how strong population growth is fueling local economies and demand for retail. MDL Group joined CORFAC International, our network of independent commercial real estate firms at the conference. Having a presence together at this industry-wide conference allows affiliate firms to exchange ideas, compare trends, and build trusted relationships beyond one city or region. Our time together at ICSC demonstrated how communication and collaboration across markets can create opportunity and value for retailers, shopping center owners, and growing communities alike.

Taken together, these three events point to the same conclusion, that relationships have a compounding effect. When people share knowledge, stay involved, and build trust over time, better decisions follow. That is the network effect in practice, and it is one of the reasons active participation matters so much in commercial real estate.

As we continue building relationships in Salt Lake City and strengthening those in Las Vegas and beyond, what that means for you is an advisor who shows up informed, connected, and ready to help you make better decisions. Markets move quickly, but when you’re working with someone plugged into the right rooms, you move with greater clarity and confidence.
